10 Hacks to Help You Navigate an In-Person Networking Event

10 Hacks to Help You Navigate an In-Person Networking Event
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by exhibitions or conferences, you’re not alone. After attending hundreds of events myself, I’ve picked up some tried and tested hacks that make networking way easier, and way more fun.

1. Start Networking Before You Even Arrive

Don’t wait until you're standing in queue for your badge. Download the event app, check the attendee list, and send a few friendly DMs ahead of time. A quick, “Hey, I saw you’re heading to Affilifest too — looking forward to connecting!” can set up a warm intro before you even check in.

2. Be Early, Stay Late

The energy is best at the start and the end. Arriving early gives you a quieter, more natural chance to chat to exhibitors and sponsors. Staying late often leads to the best "off-script" conversations over a drink.

3. Perfect Your Opening Line

Instead of the usual, "What do you do?", try:

  • "Which part of Affilifest are you most excited about?"

  • "What’s been your best find today?"

  • What’s something exciting you’re working on at the moment?

It feels fresher, sparks genuine conversation, and shows you’re actually interested.

4. Wear Something That Sparks Conversation

At events, little details stand out. A bold accessory, branded jacket, or even a bright bag can catch someone’s eye and give them a reason to start a conversation with you.

5. Talk about Affilifest!

Waiting in a queue for a ride or a coffee? Engaging in a chat about the agenda or upcoming speakers is a great icebreaker.  These conversations can provide intel about mutual interests and even new opportunities you might want to explore.

6. Two-Minute Rule

Good networking isn’t about long chats — it's about meaningful moments. Spend two minutes seeing if there’s a good vibe. If yes, suggest a coffee later. If not, move on kindly. It’s a win-win.

7. Write Mini Notes After Each Chat

On a business card or in your phone, scribble 2 or 3 words like: "Looking for finance affiliates" or "Loves TikTok." It'll make your follow-up 100x better.

8.  Ask open ended questions

Be an active listener and ask questions that reply more than a yes or no answer. EG What brings you to Affilifest?

9. Think About Giving, Not Just Getting

The best networkers ask, "How can I help you?" rather than "What can you do for me?"

10. Follow Up Fast and Personal

Within 48 hours of Affilifest, send a quick, genuine message to people you met:

  • Reference your chat ("Loved hearing about your new brand launch!")

  • Suggest a coffee/Zoom

  • Make it personal, not just "great to meet you."
